Response to Nation of Brats

Robert Shaw makes some very good points in this article, however I don’t agree with all of them. I agree that as a child you will see them throwing tantrums if they don’t get what they want. If one kid has it the others will surely want it to. When they get older they move away from the family activities and are more interested in going to the mall or movies with their friends, (friends;) family seems to always come after friends. They are more involved in their phone, television, or music. I don’t agree however with the points he made about all of these things a result to the parents not being involved in their kid’s life.(I don't agree with the points he made about all of the results to the parents not being involved with their kid's lives.) I know that as a teenager, kids need their space, it’s just a phase that we go through. As for being “media-addicted mall habitués” that’s just a way to get away from school and other responsibilities that we need to be taking care of. I think over all this article was very good (good,) but not too accurate for everyone

I chose one my assignments i had in another class awhile back. I highlighted the mistakes in pink and highlighted my edited corrections. I liked how i noticed how much i've learned from this class. I could automatically saw the changes i needed to make.

The other of the essay is Jon Pareles. The purpose is to state his opinion and persuade the audience to his view on things. the topic is Cold Play and his opinion on their music. His audience is various people anyone who listens to Cold play, anyone who listens to music in general, and other critics. The purpose is to get his opinion out their and to explain why he dislikes Cold play so much. The argument is the Bands repeating factor of self-pity and that the vocals of the singer. He has a whiny high pitch sound that doesnt appeal to the writer. The evidence he produces is that most all the Cold Play songs have some kind of "poor me" status. He uses other bands that have branched off cold play in the same style music. He uses statistics and factual evidence to back up his opinion, which makes his argument stronger. He also gives a few reasons on what the band does that is good. He gives reference to both sides of his argument which is good.

Pathways of Addiction: Opportunities in Drug Abuse Research

Contributor: Institute of Medicine, Committee on Opportunities(Author)
Publisher: National Academies Press

This book goes into detail about drug addiction and why people can get addicted. It also talks about the consequences of doing certain drugs such as; loss of brain activity, HIV, violence, tuberculosis, fetal effects, and crime. It talks about what people can do to get help and where to get the help.

This could help me with getting my audience aware of the effects that drugs are having on all of us not just the addicts.

http://www.nida.nih.gov/

This website has great sources that reference;
Medical Consequences of Drug Abuse ,Prevention Research ,Stress & Drug Abuse ,Treatment Research ,Trends & Statistics. I can use this for factual research. I will need to find good statistics and this is a good place to start.

Annotated Bibliography

I am researching the war on drugs. My research question is "What has been our governments attempt to bring this war to a close, and what are the future plans?" Drugs have been the cause of many problems and will continue to cause many more. The views of some people that there is no plan to stop the war, just an excuse to use tax dollars. Others view it as being a hard and long road, and the government's doing the best they can. It’s not hard to believe that this war is useless and that we’ve already lost, but with everyday there’s new hope for a decrease in the illegal substance abuse that has been rising in the states. My plan is to educate those who want to learn more, and to bring people to awareness of what is has been happening and what will happen.

”Drug Trafficing”
http://www.parl.gc.ca/information/library/PRBpubs/bp435-e.htm
This web site goes into reference about drug trafficking and the problem it is. They talk about what has been done. And talks about what could be done to decrease the problem. I think this web site could be of some help when i go into detail of what is the main cause of the drug problem, and what the government can do, about it.

Drug War Heresies: Learning from Other Vices, Times, and Places
Authors: Robert J MacCoun, Peter Reuter Publishers: Cambridge University press
This book is about research that provides an objective study of how the United States should approach the drug problem and whether or not drugs should be legalized to help stop the problem. It surveys what is known about the effects of different drugs and what happened when cocaine and heroin were legal in the US a century ago. The book shows that if legalized the health my change and the crime would change for the better of for the worse. The book also helps show why it is so difficult to accomplish reform of drug policy. The book also shows the different possibilities the government has and could do to change the drug problem. It would be good to learn about what would happen if we just decided to legalize the drugs that are causing us so much trouble. Also to read about the options we have.
"Facts about Drugs"
www.freevibe.com/Drug_Facts/index.asp?id=google This is a good web site because it gives the FACTS about drugs and their effects on the body and the people around the users. It will be a good reference not only for my paper but for anyone that wants to learn more about the drugs and how they can help anyone they know that needs to get help.
“It’s all a Hoax”
www.fdrs.org/governments_war_on_drugs_future.html
This web site gives the other sides view on this dilemma, they give the view that what the government is doing is just a joke. They say that instead of lowering the amount of drugs out there for users, its getting stronger and more pure. They give some views of how the government is profiting from this. It's very interesting to see the other sides view. I have a better understanding about how each person has a different argument. I still have the belief that what the government is doing is good.

”Opposing View of the War on Drugs”
www.drugpolicy.org/drugwar/
This web site is an article that gives the opposing view on the war on drugs. They talk about how the reason were having more drug crime is because the law prohibits drugs. It gives their views on the subject and has many links to other web sites that can give us more incite on why the Drug War is bad. Its good to know the other parties view on things even when it can possible be totally bogus.”Statistics, Graphs, and charts”
www.druglibrary.org/Schaffer/library/graphs/graphs.htm
This web site gives the statistics on the war. Charts and some graphs of everything to do with the war on drugs. The deaths, the costs, the estimated life span, the crime rate increase etc. This will help me with stating facts and having proof to back it up.

Treating Drug Problems written by: Dean Gerstein, Henrick Harwood, Institute of Medicine Staff This book goes into detail about the federal role in the drug treatment system that has been reduced. Making it hard to help communities respond to the new challenges, such as the crack-cocaine epidemic and the growing violence in drug the markets. It talks about how to use drug treatment and fit it into drug policy, including the different perspectives of the medical and criminal-justice communities. What is known about drug consumption behavior and what treatment approaches have proven most cost-beneficial. What areas need further research, and also includes specifications for increased study of treatment effectiveness and drug use by teens and young women.
Understanding Drugs, Alcohol and Crimewritten by:Bennett, Trevorpublished by:McGraw-Hill Education This book is a great source for me and anyone who wants to learn ALOT more on drugs. It answers vital questions and also poses questions that can help motivate you to look for more answers. It poses the question, Are drugs and crime related? They shows studies that are done that goes into further detail. I will be using this book as a resource in my final paper.

“Views of the War”
www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,999809,00.html
You can find many articles on everything in Time magazine, this is just one article of the few listed about the war on drugs and what peoples view on it are. In this article it tells the reader what the government and the states point of view of things. It states that the government believes that drug abusers shouldn't just be locked up they need help they need to be more informed and that locking them up may have affects on some but not on all. Getting the help that some addicts need could be the changing point in the rising problem.

I found this web site on the War on Drugs in America, It's a article that is meant to inform us of the growing and decreasing of Drugs in our society. It gives good statistics on what’s happening around us. It lets us know that the government is considering greater measures to contain the problem. It tells us that the use of illegal drugs is going down, but is still is high compared to other countries.

In conclusion, I found alot of good sources that will help me in my project. With the different stratagies and tools i've learned through our readings, i am confident that i will be able to find good references through these sources. I will be able to make my audience aware of the constant threat that drugs are posing on us. I have already found great references through my search. Some of which are very interesting, I've really learned alot about peoples opinions and views on the subject. I also found that the statistics on the death and crime rate very helpful for my arguments i will be using. Overall with all these sources i have learned alot.

Deadline #7- reading reflection

Arguments based on the heart-
i learned how to use emotion in my writing. You can use images and words to bring certain emotions to your readers. In chapter 2 it goes into alot of detail about this. When arguing i learned about using reasons and evidence to persuade your audience that its true. Using emotion in an argument it gives the writer more leverage. It also can back-fire if you use to much emotion. Such as, outrage, pity, and or shame. Also humor can be a good tool to use in an argument. If you can connect with the audience and make them feel comfortable and in a laid back environment it'll be easier to persuade them to your side.
Arguments based on characters-
i learned that first you need to establish yourself with the audience. Establishing authority, by your own beliefs, or show your respect to the readers, writing to them like they are who they are not below or above themselves. If you can prove your credibility your show your audience that you are trustworthy. Also go directly to what you want out of your propsal is. Dont flutter around with out letting your audience know why they are even bothering listening or reading your work.

deadline #6 evidence

For Writing Project #3 the evidence I'm going to use are personal experiences, interviews, and also online and book resources.Evidence is very important to the project because it will give my paper strength and make it more factual instead of just opinionated. I will be going through many things to look at the many sides to The war on drugs. Interviewing many different people will be one of the most important parts to my paper. Also looking at data and graphs and statistics will be the other. I will interview police officers and addicts and recovering addicts. i will look at government websites and the library resources for graphs and statistics.

deadline #6 grammer assignment

I'm correcting a paper i had to write in my psy 101 class a few years ago.

Eating disorders are very common among teenage girls. Some cases are more severe then others, but it’s a growing epidemic that is spreading all over the country.
There are a few types of eating disorders. One is anorexia; this is where the person will eat very little or none at all during the day and week. It's a very serious disorder that can be fatal in many cases if not treated. Scientists categorize anorexia as losing more than 15 lbs or more below the normal body weight, the victims are very afraid to gain weight. Anorexia can cause irregular heartbeat, shrinking bones, mineral loss, low body temperature, a peach fuzz type body hair over the surface of their skin, osteoporosis, and permanent stunned growth. These are just a few of the serious affects to this disease.
Bulimia is categorized as 2 or more binges a week for at least 3 months and is followed by purging or vomiting. This is common in both younger men, teenage girls, and young women. In the cases of most men, they are involved in some kind of sport, most commonly in wrestling. These days purging is more common, it’s easier to get away with and teens are finding its easier to keep control. Most cases teens start out with anorexia and move to bulimia to keep the suspicion down and *its easier to hide. They also can coexist. Reasons that teens get involved with purging is to punish themselves for failing not to eat. They also feel overwhelmed with the food surrounding them and the pressures of being over weight or having the image of the perfect body. The victims can suffer from cardiac arrhythmias, esophageal tears, electrolyte disturbances, gastrointestinal problems, and dental problems; such as tooth decay and loss. Bulimia is also very serious and can cause irreversible effects that will cause fatal damage.

Eating disorders are a very serious matter and cause emotional problems and can be a result of emotional stress. He/She can see themselves as fat and ugly and aren’t able to please any one. They form bad self esteem and use this as a way to take control of their own life.

Deadline#6 writing project reflection

I used alot of online tools to help complete this assignment and also looked at what people's suggestions were. I also did alot of research to make sure i had facts straight and didnt just use my emotion. I think next time i will set up a better outline on my subject and work through it more instead of looking around scatterd and trying to make things match up.
I'm concerned that i'm not getting enough across for people to actually start thinking and understanding the real and dangerous problem were having. I hope that i can show alot more in my final paper what were dealing with in todays world.
I think i learned how to better improve my writing through the readings we have been assigned and also by the peer review, its always good to get another persons advise instead of reading about it and trying to figure out how to fix things.

Deadline #6: Deadline reflection

This weeks homework was alot easier because of the previous steps i took. I learned alot about our next paper. I also learned alot about how to perfect my writing and how to use critical things in my paper. I liked this weeks work and the reading really helped me understand things alot better.

Deadline #6 Reading Reflection

I found the chapters this week very helpful, i learned about the arguments on facts and reason, which will help me with the future paper we are going to be writing. Also about logical structure for arguments and talks about evidence and what the best methods are. In chapter 16 It talks about what you can use for evidence. Evidence is found by researching, and discovering truths. Using surveys, interviewing, charts and other ways. Chapter 19 It helps you understand the importanceof evaluating your sources before you jump the gun and use them for your paper. It gives you strategies to help you know what to look for and help you evalute your source like; relevance, currency, and whos the audience its purposed to. It also helps with online evaluating. I learned how to properly use quotations and paraphrasing. It also showed me how to use pictures in my paper.

Deadline #5 deadline reflection

I actually understood this weeks homework .. what a shocker. I really like the peer review. It allowed my to read through most of the papers and get a better feel for everyones topics. It also was a big help to reread through my paper and evaluate the comments and see what i need to change and do better on. Through the readings and the assignments I've learned a lot that will help me in my final paper. It was good to do the peer review so at least we can help each other out, instead of editing ourselves. I have a lot to work on and not a lot of time to do it.

I reviewed and commented on:

deadline #5 reading reflection

This week as i was reading the assigned chapters i learned about how to search for information in a book and how to find and research things in the library. Also, how to check out books from the library or what to do when the book is already checked out. I learned in Chapter 7 the different field research methods and it helped me figure out what i should do for my paper. It helped me learn how to organize and figure out what questions are best in a interview and what to look for in an interview. I think this will help me considering I am planning on doing multiple interviews for my paper.
On the internet sites is helped show how to better your paper. By proving ways to help with grammar problems and it also went through editing processes, which will help when i peer edit and also when i revise my own paper.

Bad Neighbor Policy : Washington's Futile War on Drugs in Latin America
Author: Ted Galan Carpenter
Publisher: Palgrave Macmillan

By reading what the description of the book is , "Some prominent Latin American political leaders have dared to criticize Washington's actions and even hint that the option of legalization should be considered. At the same time, the U.S. government seems determined to perpetuate, even escalate, the antidrug crusade. The $1.3 billion military aid package to Colombia approved by Congress in the summer of 2000 confirms that the international phase of the campaign against drugs still has powerful support in Washington.

Spending on federal antidrug measures also continues to increase, and both the domestic and international tactics employed by the government in the name of an uncompromisingly drug-free society bring the inflammatory metaphor of war closer to reality. Ending the prohibitionist system would produce numerous benefits for the United States and Latin America alike. In this hard-hitting book, Ted Galen Carpenter takes a broad view of the fiasco that is Washington's drug war and provides a candid portrait of the situation in Latin America. Bad Neighbor Policy is a must-read for anyone interested in the real story behind our relationship with the countries south of our border. "
It explains perfectly, I think this book would have it's benefits, because we do have countries around us that are to suffering as we are with this epidemic. It would be a good thing to research how our governments decisions about the drug crisis will effect other neighboring countries. Alex Williams made a good point when he commented, That we should go for the source of the problem, get rid of the production of drugs and most of the drugs are coming from out of the United states so this problem is EVERYONES problem not just the US.

http://www.freevibe.com/Drug_Facts/index.asp?id=google

This is a good website because it gives the FACTS about drugs and their effects on the body and the people around the users. It will be a good reference not only for my paper but for anyone that wants to learn more about the drugs and how they can help anyone they know that needs to get help.

deadline #5 FIELD RESEARCH

As for the methods of research i could do and actually have time for, i can do an interview with the sheriff. One of the benefits of having my father work for and directly with Sheriff Joe is that i can meet with him and he can help me learn more and give me good incite of what the government, at least in Arizona will be doing to decrease the illegal drug population.
I will also be interviewing other officers in the force to get their incite and their views on the matter. I also will be talking with drug users at rehabilitation centers an ask what they think needs to change and what their views on the matter are.
These sources will all help because I'll be getting information from people on both sides of the fence. Those who believe there needs to be a change and how things should change, and those who think that there isn't a big problem. I also hope to find a website to where people post their opinions about the war on drugs. That might take some searching, but if there is a website i will find it.

deadline #4 wp#1

The “war on drugs,” What has been our governments attempt to bring this war to a close, and what are the future plans? For more than a decade this war has been going on. The government has focused most on the “hard core” drugs, which we would call cocaine, heroin, meth-amphetamines, ecstasy, and harmful others. These drugs have been the cause of many problems and will continue to cause many more. Some peoples view about it is that it’s a hoax and that there is no plan. Others view is that it has been a hard and long road and the governments doing their best. It’s not hard to believe that this war is useless and that we’ve already lost, but with everyday there’s new hope for a decrease in the illegal substance abuse that has been rising in the states.

There are some who believe that this “war” is not important, and a waste of time and money. It’s hard to agree with these ideas. This problem is more important to some people because they have experienced the pain and destruction it’s had on them or someone they know, instead of reading about it. Just recently the government has been putting awareness ads on the radio, T.V., and in magazines to help educate those who are ignorant to this growing epidemic we have. Arizona is a good example of this. You probably have heard or seen the commercials on the Meth Project. It's the project that is bringing Arizona residences aware of the growing problem here. We may not be able to see the effects of what these commercials and ads are having for another few years but i have a feeling we will see a decrease in the use of this drug.

I want to write this paper not only to further educate myself in this problem that is going on around us, but also anyone else who wants to learn more. I think that it’s hard to believe in something that you have little knowledge about. Just recently i had a friend who abused meth-amphetamines, as a result of using this drug he became irrational and a totally different person. A loving, trustworthy, religious person, turned and stole thousands of dollars from family and friends. The thinking that goes on through addicts minds is, "I'm not hurting any one else, and I'm only having a good time." The problem is that drugs effect everything and everyone around you. Those who have problems with drugs often believe they are in total control. They keep spinning to rock bottom with out even realizing whats happening. If the government has ideas that can help those who are struggling or those that may struggle in the future why not listen and support them. I If maybe we know more about it then it could help change the problem. Nothing can ever get done if no one’s willing to try and change it. I also want to look further into the governments plan and how they think the community can help.

I think there are flaws in the governments plans, but also i think it's the smartest I've heard yet. I've seen what can happen to peoples life if they get involved in drugs. I think that learning more and making everyone aware of the problem is the way to go. The government also has the idea that addicts that are arrested don't necessarily go straight to jail. They need help and that's their main purpose. To get the help that people need will help change the problem.

During the next few weeks I will do much research and continue to read about the opinions of others. I will research on government websites and look edu websites as well. I will also use MCC'c resources looking electronically and also checking out books on the topic. The more i learn the more I'll be able to bring my audience to awareness and also educate them and myself about the future plans that the government has in store.

Deadline #3 HW # 3

To start my research i need to focus on government sites, find statistics, and find articles in either the newspaper and articles pertaining to the War on Drugs. I would also like to talk personally with someone that is involved more on the subject.

Deadline #3 HW # 2

How bad is the War on drugs, and is it going to get worse if continues the way it is.

I narrowed my question by listing all things about my topic and all i wanted to learn more about. I then went down the list eliminating the things that weren't as interesting or the things i didn't feel were as important. I then came up with my question by adding the 2 things that i think would help me and others understand.

Deadline #2 Reflect on my topic

I think what initially got me interested with this topic is that i know so much about it, I would like to know more on it so i know what to say to the friends, the family i know that are struggling with the problem that so many other people are struggling with. Going more in-depth with the topic only made my interest in it greater. There was no surprise there. I'm really not going to go into detail with all the experiences that I've had, but seeing what Drugs have done to people i care about an people that i know can be so great in life just makes learning more so much easier. I know personally that drugs just are a waste of time, they are give you nothing, they don't care about you, and they don't make your life any better. And I'm not going to post any of the experiences I've had or I've witnessed but if you would really like to know you can just ask me.

Saving the oceans is a informative article, I love the ocean so its a topic I'd be interested in writing about. The article states that the worlds oceans are in danger from overfishing and the pollution thats being dumped into the water everyday. With continuous research scientists are finding that many of the large predator fish are going missing. They go into detail about how the run off of the wetlands are causing alot of problems. They also have the statistics of if we dont change things we could have serious and irreversible problems. They also make a point in letting us know that were not running out of fish and even though thats not a problem it doesn't mean the fish are perfectly fine. They live in the water that were polluting.

I've always wondered what is the deciding factor for why kids will commit suicide. I've never quite understood what drives them to hurt not just themselves but those around them. This website goes into detail about some causing factors and the percent rate of teenage kids try or succeed in suicide. There are many reasons why people come to this and the website gives examples of what can cause this. Most attempts are unsuccessful but some are. Websites gives users precaution measures for those who want to be successful, and thought these websites should be baned... who's to argue the freedom of speech. The article gives examples of some warning signs that could help prevent an attempt. It also informs the reader on things that can help reduce the rate of teenage suicide.

Deadline #2 Narrowing my topic

I'm choosing to do my project on the War on Drugs, I narrowed it by what i know most about and what would keep my interest.

Deadlin #2 reading reflection

I was really fully and utterly confused on this weeks homework... still am but as i read Chapter 1 of Everything's an Argument, i learned alot about the difference between the arguments. I also found that I would be better at making arguments that would convince and that explore.
Chapter 20 was showing what is expected in MLA format, it gave good examples of how to do things properly. I've learned MLA format in Eng 101 last year but it was still a good chapter to get me refreshed and back to speed of things.
Reading the Chapters in the Bedford Researcher showed me good skills on researching things better. It gave me better ways to take notes and make things easier to remember and read.

Deadline #2 HELP REPLY

deadline #1, HW8, help

I don't really have any questions yet, the only concern I think i have is how I'll ever remember my passwords to all these websites. Not to mention how I'll probably forget to check or use any of them. Thats about it really.
